The small, rustic Vargan Babayev Billingsgate Jaw Harp is ideal for experienced jaw harp players with a sure instinct. You can really let its lively, cheerful nature shine through with passionate, fast-paced playing and enjoy the delicate nuances of sound. The fine reed needs to be guided precisely to avoid tinkling. But with a little concentration, you can guide it well in the stable frame.
While the filigree tongue is reminiscent of Kyrgyz Temir Komuz Jaw Harps, the frame design of the Vargan Babayev Billingsgate makes it look like a traditional Munnharpe from Norway. Babayev orientated the construction of this musical instrument on a 14th century Vargan.
Includes a custom-fit wooden box with leather strap and wooden bead for tightening.
It is the artistic approach that currently makes the jaw harps of Dmitry Babayev the most excellent and conspicuous instruments in the Russian-speaking world. Furthermore, the jaw harps leave his workshop in an immaculate state. We spoke with him about the aesthetic side of making jaw harps and his personal access to those instruments.
Russia is a country with a handful of jaw harp traditions: in Sakha/Yakutia, in the Altai, and in Tuva the Khomus (or Komus) is played; in Bashkortostan the Kubyz is known, and in Western Russia and in the big cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg one can hear the name Vargan. An overview.
