Thunder Drums

Imitating lightning and thunder acoustically? – Producing a real thunderstorm can be accomplished with our thunder drums. In fact the thunder drum can be ranged in somewhere between percussion instrument and effect instrument. The sound of thunder is known from movies, radio plays, operas, and maybe from puppet shows. It is probably one of the best known, though nostalgic images one bears in mind about a foley artist: A big thin sheet metal is moved through the air like a palm frond and produces a terrifying thunder. The sound of such a thunder sheet can of course also be heard in musical pieces, such as in Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” or in “An Alpine Symphony” by Richard Strauss. Moreover the effect of thunder is a welcome change in the drum set of bands.

By the way, the first thunder imitating instruments were produced in the 17th century already. To raise the rumble of thunder for the theater the Italian architect Nicola Sabbattini built a box with steps, over which he let heavy metal balls roll. We can promise you that the modern versions of thunder drums, available at DAN MOI, can thunder persuasively and flash acoustically as well as a real thunderstorm. The Iranian Dareios thunder drum is most versatile in sound. It has a more than 1 m long metal spring, a precious wooden corpus, and it is covered on both ends with a drumhead. It is an extraordinary musical instrument which can also be used as a drum. The painted models also suit as children’s toys or can be used for early musical education.
