Susap - Slim - No. 16

Jaw Harp from Papua

One of the traditional musical instruments of Papua New Guinea is the Jaw Harp Susap made of bamboo or palm trees. The Susap is plucked by numerous ethnic groups in Papua during courtship. By playing on the Susap, the man can court the beloved with a certain distance and tell her musically what feelings he has for her. In the case of a possible rejection, the musical abilities or the instrument itself can also be blamed. In this way an embarrassing situation is avoided and the necessary interaction in the mostly small groups is not affected.

The playing technique of the Susap is very special, as it is plucked towards the face and therefore it needs some practice. Then the plucking and its percussive sound is a special pleasure.

This precisely crafted Jew's Harp was made by Steev Kindwald, who was inspired by the traditional construction method.
