Susap Wawoi

Jaw Harp in Papua Style

One of Papua New Guinea's oldest musical instruments is the Susap jaw harp made of bamboo or palm trees. It is used by many ethnic groups on Papua in their courtship.

This stringed jaw jew's harp inspires the musician and bohemian Steev Kindwald to craft completely new and unique creations. The Susap Wawoi resembles the traditional Susaps from Papua in its construction, while the bamboo used by Steev was collected in a bamboo forest. In order to refine the material, he has hardened it in a lengthy procedure over fire, before working on and designing it. The burnt-in simplified calabash is Steev's trademark.

The playing technique of the Susap is very special, as it is plucked towards the face and therefore requires some practice. But then the plucking and its percussive sound is a great pleasure.
