Xiao

The Chinese Xiao is quite similar to the Shakuhachi, it is even seen as the predecessor of the famous Japanese bamboo flute. Just as the Shakuhachi, the Xiao is made of the end of a bamboo root. It is blown through a notch at the upper end of the flute. The Xiao belongs to the oldest Chinese musical instruments. Compared to the Shakuhachi it has a longer bore (sound tube) and therefore sounds deeper and warmer. Its pitch range covers two octaves. In previous times the Xiao was played by Buddhist monks for meditation.
