The Caval Romanesc has a warm and melancholy sound. It owes its pleasant timbre to the elder wood from which our flute specialist Marek made it. And as with the impressive Fujara and the popular Koncovka, Marek was inspired by a shepherd's flute when designing the Caval.
The Caval Romanesc is the typical end-blown flute of shepherds in southern Romania. It has five finger holes, arranged in a group of three and a group of two with a slight gap at the lower end of the flute. The simple mouthpiece also provides the intense, authentic sound. By pushing your lower lip slightly over the edge of the sound opening, you can intensify the caval sound and experiment beautifully. This takes a little practice but is easy to learn. The technique of singing or humming into it is also popular with caval players and enriches the flute's wide range of sounds.
The versatile caval romanesc is related to the shepherd flute kaval, which has the same name. It is widespread from the Balkan Mountains to the Ararat Mountains in Armenia, passing through Anatolia. Both flutes are traditionally played by male shepherds and musically enrich the natural, but harsh life with the animals. Their soft melodies tell of freedom and longing.
Whether as a solo instrument or in an ensemble at traditional festivals and events, the caval/kaval touches the soul with its unique soundscape. Today, the shepherd flutes can be found in various music genres, from jazz to electro.
The powerful and multifaceted caval romanesc was professionally handcrafted and is particularly suitable for musicians who already have some flute experience.
