Sea shells have been used in many ways by our Stone Age ancestors in days long gone. They served as means of payment, were processed into precious jewellery, used in ritual ceremonies, as playing stones or even as musical instruments. With them we can bring the story to life. Just like flutes made of bones and barking woods made of horn, ivory and wood, shells are among the oldest instruments in the world. They were used as rattles, ratchets or for percussive sounds.
Our percussion shells have their musical origin on the Atlantic coast of Spain, in Galicia, where they are still used today in traditional music and there are indications that this extraordinary shell species has already served many Celtic groups on the Atlantic coasts as a percussion instrument. This is not surprising, because with the two shells you can create incredible effects.
Since each valve is naturally covered with larger rows of ribs that consist of even smaller, more delicate rows of grooves, they are ideal for rubbing against each other, careful tapping or light beating. We have selected especially firm and finely ribbed shells for you, which allow many playing possibilities from tenderly rustling to the grand Güiro sound. Due to the pronounced curvature you can create a resonance space together with the palm, which gives the sound an unexpected volume, which is characterized by a remarkably high assertiveness.
