These medium-sized jaw harps are forged by Luca Boggio from Piedmont (IT) in the Sardinian style. This is characterised by the fact that the grip area of the frame is relatively large and circular in shape. This not only looks chic, but also makes the jaw harp very easy to hold. In Sardinia, jaw harps are usually called trunfa.
These wonderful hand-crafted instruments have a fairly taut tongue that is nevertheless easy to pluck. It reacts very directly and has a beautiful loud tone that allows many variations and playing techniques. It also responds excellently to breathing techniques.
Pure coincidence brought Luca Boggio together with the Ribeba specialist Alessandro Zolt a few years ago. Both come from Piedmont and are jaw harp enthusiasts. Zolt researches the history of the Ribeba. Boggio forges jaw harps. The two work together for almost a year to make a copy of a Ribeba from Valsesia. In a conversation with Helen Hahmann from DAN MOI, Luca Boggio reports on how he deals with the forgotten heritage of the northern Italian jaw harps (Ribeba).
