The Cyanus jaw harp from Khakassia (Russia), is an outstanding instrument crafted by the talented smith Ivanych. The frame of this remarkable jaw harp is both stable and pressure-sensitive, beautifully burnished blue and polished. Its vibration behavior is very strong and long-lasting, allowing the player to set it in motion from a standstill.
Its sound is rich, crisp and defined, with a volume range of upper middle to loud. Playing techniques with the Cyanus involve the use of the oral cavity, tongue, larynx and diaphragm, allowing the player to achieve a diverse range of dynamics: from slow and reverential to fast and rhythmic, and from solo to accompanying.
Holding in your hand, it is feels soft and smooth, highly responsive and does not rattle even during fast play. It also responds remarkably well to modulation.
Overall, the Cyanus jaw harp is an exceptional instrument and a great choice for any jaw harp enthusiast.
Russia is a country with a handful of jaw harp traditions: in Sakha/Yakutia, in the Altai, and in Tuva the Khomus (or Komus) is played; in Bashkortostan the Kubyz is known, and in Western Russia and in the big cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg one can hear the name Vargan. An overview.
