Uranus or Uranos embodies the vault of heaven in Greek mythology and so it is not surprising that the shape of this jaw harp is reminiscent of stars above a planet. This instrument is another outstanding Vargan from master Glazyrin, which suits to be played solo or in an ensemble. Its overtone-rich sound is full, loud and deep. The reed is screwed thightly and relatively taut, so that you can play particularly rhythmically and dynamically without losing the clarity of sound.
Russia is a country with a handful of jaw harp traditions: in Sakha/Yakutia, in the Altai, and in Tuva the Khomus (or Komus) is played; in Bashkortostan the Kubyz is known, and in Western Russia and in the big cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg one can hear the name Vargan. An overview.
